AUCKLAND WATERFRONT
COLLIER HELD UP. A settlement arrived at.
The trouble with the waterside workers, who refused to unload the steamer Canadian Haider, which had arrived from Newcastle, has been settled. Tho work of discharging tho vessel is now being continued. In ' a statement regarding tho attitude of the members of the Waterside Workers’ Union, the president, Mr M. Saunders, said the men had acted on their own initiative, neither the union nor himself having issued any instructions relating to tho steamer. Nearly all tho available labour had been engaged on other vessels, in addition to which there were steamers in tho stream waiting to l>e berthed. Tho action of the men in refusing to unload tho Canadian Raider was based on objections to the rate of pay to the crow and a contention that she was carrying freight at a less cost than tho ships recognising union conditions. The agents for the steamer announced that a satisfactory arrangement had been made with the waterside workers, who had notified that they would work the vessel. The terms of tho settlement were not available.
