The costal steamer Huia left Wellington at 11 a.m. yesterday for New Flymouth and AVanganui. The vessel is due back hero on Saturday morning. Tho Karamu loft 'Gisborne yesterday for Wellington, where she is due tomorrow in order to change her articles. The vessel is expected_ to get away tomorrow evening for Westport. The Rosamond, which is due back at Wellington to-morrow with a load of chaff from Picton, is to sail to-morrow evening for Greymouth. The Kokiri left Westport at 6.30 a.m. yesterday with a full load of coal for Wellington, where she is due this morning. Tho A. and A, Line chartered steamer Nuddea, en route from New York, left Auckland at 6.30 a.m. yesterday for Wok lington, where she is duo to-morrow morning with part cargo to discharge. Tho New Zealand Shipping Company's liner Orari is to leave Wellington on Saturday for Lyttelton, Timaru, Melbourne find Sydney to complete discharge of her cargo from St. John. Tho Euahine, en route from Wellington to Southampton and London, left Kingston (Jamaica) on March 6th for Newport News, where she arrived on March 11th. The Opawa, en rouito from Liverpool to New Zealand ports, arrived at Newport News on' March 7th and resumed her voyage on March 9th. Tho Ofcaki, bound from- Liverpool to Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin, arrived at Newport News on March 11th. Tho Whakatane, now discharging coal ait Auckland, is to leave that port on March 24th for Whakatane for Homeward loading. A Press Association message from Dunedin reports that the auxiliary schooner Houto, well known an the coastal trade, has been purchased by Briscoe and Co. from the Iron and Steel Company of New Zealand, and will be employed in carrying tiles from Dunedin to tho company's northern branches. The Houto is of 77 tons gross, and haa visited Wellington at various times for some years past. THE~WAIHEMO. The Union Company's new steamer Waihemo, now discharging portion of her case oil andi timber at Lyttelton from San Francisco, will load general cargo for the American port montioned, 4t present she is timed to sail from Lyttelton this evening for Dunodin and Wellington to continue discharge of hot sase oil. OPIHI AT LYTTELTON. .After an absence of about a year and two • months the steamer Qpihi, owned by Reese Bros., of Christchurch, arrived' at Lyttelton on Monday morning with a cargo of timber from JBunbury. As will bo remembered, tho Opihi was formerly the Union Company's/ Wellington hulk Lilla, and was converted into a steamer at Lyttelton, the engines and machinery {rom tho wrecked Opouri having been

installed. The reconstruction work, which was carried out by local labour, wa» completed in seven months, tta nor latest outward voyage tho Opihi left Auckland on January 18th, 1919, for Marseilles, via Melbourne, Fremantle, Colombo, and Port Said. At the last-named port she loaded for Luis da Rhone, aud subsequently called at Algoria and Orau. Thence she proceeded with fruit and ore to Dunkirk. At Ponarth, her next port of call, she loaded coal for Port Said. Subsequently she proceeded to Aden and loaded salt for Calcutta aud Singapore. A part cargo of general commodities was thon shipped for New Zealand, and the vessel called en route at liunbury, where 400,000 ft of timber was loaded. On proceeding to Newcastle for bunker supplies, the Opihi was obliged to put into Melbourne first to have her bunkers replenished. After discharging Jier timber at I»yttolton the Opihi will bo docked for overhaul and cleaning. Thereafter sUo will sail for Auckland, thence to Opua (Bay of Plenty).' Captain Campbell, who has been in charge of the Opihi since she was first commissioned, is. signing off, and his place, will be taken, by Captain Pierson, lato of tho Opouri, who recently re., turned to New Zealand after four years' naval service. Mr Rogersou, who ha» been in the Navy for three years, is to take charge of the engiiieroom, in succession to Mr Hail. PANAMA'S BIGGEST YEAR, Traffic through the Panama Canal in 1919 exceeded that of any previous year. Two thousand three hundred and ninetysix ships, of 7,128,000 net tons, passed through the waterway. The cargoes of the merchant ships amounted to 7,711,000. tons. Ships measuring 7000 tons, carrying 10,000 tons of cargo, were 2 per cent. greater than in any previous year. December broke the monthly record, 283 ships, of 957,000 not tons, carrying cargoes of 953,000 tons, traversed the Canal. The tolls collected amounted to .£178,275 for December and .£1,394,400 for the year. IDLE SHIPS" RECOMMISSIONED. After, in some cases, eleven weeks oJ idleness, the marine engineers who.had been on strike returned to their ehip* at Melbourne on February 37th. Practically without exception the men again, "signed on." Seamen, cooks, and stewards, as well as masters and officers, had also to be re-ensagfcd, and the mercantile marine office in Market street wai tha sceno of great activity. The arrivals at Auckland during the month of February totalled 473 vessels, of 231,742 tons gross. Departures during tho month totalled 497 vessel's or 215,186 tons gross register. The Olliopo.
