PORIRUA RIDING

PURPOSED SUBDIVISION. The chairman (Mr S. Bryant) of the Makara County Council reported at yesterday’s meeting on the. proposal to divide the Porirua' riding for the purpose of adjusting rtpresontation on the Makara' County Council. A special committee had discussed the question, and 1 as a result he submitted the following motion: “’that the Makara Uounty lUouncil hereby resolves: ‘That the county bo devided into five ridings; (2) "that the Makara riding rctain its boundaries and representation(ay that the Porii-ua riding be subdivided into four separate ridings; (4) that the boundaries of the subdivision be dtlined and lithe new ridings named; (5) and that the representation be adjusted so that the representation of the several ridings be proportioned to the ratable value and number of olectirs respectively and in such manner that the representation on the council shall not be more than seven councillors.”' ' The ctouuty clerk (Mr W. L. Beech) had drawn up a comprehensive statement concerning the suggested subdivision of the Porirua riding. The new ridings suggested were: — Ohariu: Approximate valuation ratable, £171,9o8; area ratable, 14,628 acres; number of electors, 84'; possible votes, 121; road miles, 161; approximate rate (at lid), £9BO. Ngahauranga: Valuation ratable, £269,879; -area ratable, 11598 otcres-,-electors, 141 j possible votes, 182; road miles, 9J ; rate, £1489. Porirua (including natives): Valuation ratable, £201,012; area ratable, 10,986 acres; electors, 226; possible votes, 222; road miles, 18J; rate, £llsl. Tawa: Valuation ratable, £84,788; area ratable. 6462 acres; electors, 09; possible votes, 176; road miles, 9i; rate, £486. After a brief discussion the proposal was notn supported by councillor®, the motion lapsing for -want of a seconder.
