TABLOID ATHLETICS
NEW IDEA IN MILITARY TRAINING
A tabloid sports meeting was held at the Wellington College grounds yesterday afternoon. Six teams from the Senior Cadets competed. The idea is part of the new scheme of military training. These athletic* will servo as » vein from “military" exercises, and the hours spent at them will bo counted as time spent in training. The six teams consisted of ten boys aach. There ware three flat cj»?nts—100yds, 50yds backwards, and relay race. There were also three jumping events—long jump, high jump, and triple jump. The seventh competition was the putting of a 121 b shot. The boys competed in their cadet uniforms, and the teams consisted of all sizes of lads, from the big to tho small. The idea is to encourage all boys to go in for athletics. In conteste between individuals the backward boys often take little interest : their chances of success are small. The teaming scheme gets over this, as it is tho average which counts. Standards were set in every competition— 18ft for the shot putting; 13ft Gin for tho long jump: 3ft Gin for th* high jump: and so on. At the end of the sixth comne' teams No. 1 and No. i were even. The relay race was still left, - and in this event No. 1 team was successful, and so won the competition. No. 1 team wacaptained by Sergeant Campbell and No. i team by Sergeant-Majoi Mandell. The meeting was conducted bv 1 Grover (O.C. Wellington group), assisted by Lieutenants J. Thompson, .E. F Petrie, and Sorgcant-Maior Leadbron! The staff of Wellington College were th' judges and the starters. The meeting considered to bo a success.
