PROFITEERING ALLEGED
WELLINGTON GROCER CHARGED. FIRST CASE UNDER BOARD OF TRADE ACT. A most important case, the first brought under the provisions of the Board of Trade Act, dealing with profiteering, was called on at 'the Police Court yesterday, when a Courtenay place grocer, Bertie Smith, was charged with selling to Hazel Edith Carroll, a visitor from Auckland,' two b. ties of Mellin’a Foods* a price u reasonably fiign—as od per uottle. Mr A. M. Salsk, in asking for an adjournment for one pointed out that the defendant had only been served with the summons on Tuesday, and added that the latter had now instructed him to. secure the "most eminent counsel’’ procurable. That would take soitie time, and then the defence had* to he prepared. Mr Prendeville_ objected to a long adjournment, but stated that he would not object to one of three or four days. His principal witness was on holiday, and she had already overstayed her leave as a result of the case.
The magistrate, Mr B. Page, S.M., said he thought the time asked for rather long but as it was an imnortanit case and one in which the defendant was liable to a heavy penalty, he would not refuse the application. The hearing was then set down for March 26th.
