CLERGY FAREWELLED

SERVICES EULOGISED. At St. Joseph's Church, Buckle street, on Tuesday night, the Eev. Fathers Hurley, Adm., and J. O'Cbnnor, who have beeji transferred to Tiniaru and Wangianui respectively, were farewelled, and Mr J. J. L. Burke presented Arch bishop O'Shea with a handsome pectoral cross, as a token of esteem from the Catholic Federation on the occasion of his Silver Jubilee as a priest. Speaking of tho services rendered to tho parish by the departing priests, Mr M. J. Reardon emphasised the good work that Father Hurley had done in connection with education. He felt sure, ho said, that every father and mother in the parish appreciated that phase of hia work, and he claimed that I in Father Hurley they had as fine an ! example of tho priesthood as they had . in. New Zealand. (Applause.) In. re- ! gard to Father O'Connor, he said they j very much regretted his departure. He had endeared himself to all sections of the community, and hia work among tho po*r during tho influenza .epidemic would ever be held in grateful remembrance. (Applause.) Mr J. J. L. Burke read an address to the departing priests, and presented Father Hurley with marks of esteem from the various sodalities, together with substantial cheques. Mr J. A.Scott and Mr W. F. Johnson also referred to the good work that had been done by Father Hurley on behalf of the federation, of which he has been president for five and a half years. Archbishop O'Shea also expressed regret at the departure of Fathers Hurley and O'Connor. Father Hurley had been eleven years in the 'parish, and Father O'Connor nearly five years. Two more amiable companions or better priests it would be' hard to find anywhere. (Applause.) For the last seven years Father Hurley had acted as Administrator of one of the largest parishes in the Dominion, and in the opinion of his ecclesiastical and religious superiors ho had been a complete success.

Tho Ilevs. Father Hurley and O'Connor suitably replied.
