N.Z.E.F. SCHOLARSHIPS
FIFTY-TWO GRANTED AT TOTAL COST OF £22,925. Tho following information with regard to Now Zealand Expeditionary Force Scholarships, 50 of which have been granted in England and two in New Zoaland, has been supplied to the Minister for Defence:—The scholarships range in valuo from £l5O to £2oo. according to the university or college, the eiibjoct selected, and the financial means of the scholar. Two have been granted at £l5O per annum; two at £175; 28 at £200; and 18 at 43250 per annum. The duration of the scholarships is from six months to three years, which may bo extended m special caees if recommended by the governing body of the university, etc , at which tho scholarship is held. One has been granted for sis months; two for one year; seven for two years; one for two and a halif years j end thirty-nine for three years. The conditions are that the > nominees must havo reached matriculation standard, and must bo under thirty years old. They are required to sign a contract to return to New Zealand within, ono year of the completion of the scholarship and to reside Jn New Zealand not loss than three years,commencing with date of return. The scholarship holder s are discharged in England under the same conditions as in New Zealand, with guaianteo of return passage to New Zealand at troopship rates. The subjects selected are as follows: Agriculture, 6; architecture, 5; art, 2: arts. 3; classics, 7; engineering, G; •jconomics, 3; forestry,, 4; industrial science, 1; language, 2;'law. 1; matiiomatics, 1; medicine, 6; philosophy, I: science., 8. In addition to the CO scholarships above, two were granted in New Zealand on the special r<vorazaendation -of the Scholarship Committee.
The total expenditure undertaken to provide these scholarships is £22,925. Twenty al the scholarships aro hold at Oxford and Cambridge and fivo at Edinburgh University (medicine); while two are at Canterbury College. New Zealand, for engineering. These are at £l5O Der annum, with tho promise of passage allowance to England and one year's post-eraduate courso at £"-■' it tme student ehows exceptional ability.
