POLICE COURT NEWS

A FATHER CHARGED ALLEGED ILL-TREATMENT OF HIS SON. OTHER CHARGES PENDING. That he wilfully ill-treated his elevenyear old son so as to cause him unnecessary suffering was a charge preferred against Charles Grayndlcr, a man wellknown in Labour circles, at the Police Court yesterday. Mr 33. Page, S.M., presided. Sub-Inspoetor Emerson asked for a remand lor one week as other charges were .pending. He said the accused had been suffering from influenza. Jlr P. J. O'Regan, who appeared for Grayndler, asked for bail, but Mr P. W Jackson, for Mrs Grayndler, submitted thut the application should bo granted only on the condition that the accused did not go near bis wile or his ■home. He stated that Mrs Grayndler ■was taking other proceedings. Tho magistrate granted the adjournment, bail being- allowed in- self oi ,£IOO, or one surety of UHOO, on the conditions suggested by Mr Jackson. MINOR OFFENCES. -On charges .of drunkenness, five first offenders were dealt with. Violet Watson, for a third offence, was fined £l, and prohibited for twelve months, a-nd William Richards was mulcted 10s for a second offence. A. fine of- £2 10s, and 6s costs, was imposed on Richard 'N. Kcaning for refusirv,- to leave the Britannia 'lheatre when' requested to do so, and for drunkenness ho was convicted and discharged. MAINTENANCE OASES. APPLICATIONS APPROVED.

Throe applications for maintenance 4 we.re dealt ■with by Mr E. Page, S.M. Victor J. Burroughs and Arthur J. Neilson were each ordered to pay 40s per week towards the support of their respective wives, and dn the case of the former an order for summary separation was also granted, the grounds 'being wilful failuro to maintain. Frederick A. Merrick was ord«*ed to pay 27s Gd per week towards the support of his wife.
