Colonel R. Logan. Into Administrator of Samoa, accompanied 'ey Mrs
Logan, left Wellington tor Loudon by the Paparoa yesterday. Hr John William Davis, for ninny years one of the bost-knoivn menfbers of tho staff of the Land and Survey Department, died on Thursday at. his residence at Ngaio. Mr Davis became Land Transfer draughtsman in Wellington in 1687, and was appointed chief draughtsman in tho Wellington district land office in May, .1908. In April of tho following year ho was promoted to tho position of chief draughtsman in t'ho head office •of tho Land and Survey Department. He retired bn superannuation, but .returned to Government work during the war period. Mr Davis, who was a son of the late Mr Rowland Robert Davis, of .Realkill, Christchurch, took a keen interest iiV outdoor sports, and in his early days in Canterbury was a line runner and oarsman. He was a prominent churchman, and for some years held a seat on tho Vestry of St. Thomas’s, Wellington South. The funeral took place on Saturday uitornoon.
