Colonel Word created a profound impression when he made his first reappearance in the House of Commons after a prolonged service in Russia. He gave an unvarnished tale of his experiences, narrating; horrors in a plain colourless style, and telling how dead bodies were tumbled into the streets daily from the windows and the wells choked with dead.
