The Wellington district section of tire Australasian Institute of Marine Engineers has filed an application for increased wages and improved conditions, which will shortly bo heard. Blenheim; Iron and Steel Company of Now Zealand, Ltd., Dunedin; Kaiapoi Shipping and Trading Co., Ltd., Kaiapoi; Miller Bros., Fort Chalmers; New Zealand Refrigerating Co.. Christchurch; Orepuki Shipping Co., Ltd., Christchurch; Opihii Shipping Go., Ltd., Christ-* church; Fatca Farmers’ Co-operative Freezing Co.. Ltd., Fatea: Kicnardson and Co., Ltd., Fort Ahuriri; South Taranaki Shipping Co., Ltd., Wellington; Stevenson, Stewart and Co., Clirktchurch and Lyttelton; Wakatu Shipping Co., Ltd., , Wellington; ‘‘John,’’ Ltd. The demands are, as follow:—Monthly schedule of, wages: Chief or only engineer—Under 20 nominal horse-power.’ £26; 20 to under 40 n.h.p., £2S ; 40 to under 60 n.h.p., .028 10s; 60 to under 80 n.h.p., .£29; 80 to under 100 n.h.p., .£3l; 100 to under 150 n.h.p, X 32. Second engineers—Under 80 n.h.p., So to under 150 n.h.p., .£24. Third en-gineers—-Under 100 n.h.p., i£2o; 100 to 150 n.h.p., £2l 10s. Whenever vessels are engaged on any. excursions on Sundays or public holidays, it is demanded that each engineer shall be paid an extra day’s pay. After twelve months' continuous service engineers shall be entitled to holidays on full pay, without victualling allowance, as follows: Chief or solo engineer, 21 duy-s; other engineers 14 days. It k also requested that, except during absence by leave, every engineer shall bo entitled to meals and proper accommodation up to the ordinary istandard, either on his vessel or us may be otherwise arranged by hi« employer, or eke to receive an allowance us follows;—For victualling and accommodation: Chief or solo engineers, 11s per day; all other engineers, 10s per day, «r iiOa per week. For accommodation only': Chief or sole engineers and all other engineers, 4s .per day. For victualling only: Chief or sole engineers and all other engineers, 7s 6d per day. When engineers are removed to suit the conditions of the special trade in which their steamers are engaged, free transit shall lie provided for their families and effects. The award, it 'k desired, shall operate as troin July Ist. 1819, to December 31sl 1921.
