PROGRESS OF INQUIRY. Pre33 Asuociation. DUNBDIN, February 20. Before the Industries Committee this morning the Hon. G. Thomson advocated the State taking over control of tho rkh industry insofar as buying and distribution were concerned. ~.,., , , Professor Malcolm submitted the claims of the University in relation to research -work, suggesting a subsidy by the Government to provide assistance to release professors from routine work. Mr J. Hinton advocated the abolition of the duty on pineapple and strawberry pulps. •Mr Malcolm, M.P., placed before the bommittee the possibilities in regard to the distillation by the State of industrial spirits and suggested that no licenses should' be granted till the question of State control had. been fully considered by the committee. Mr C. A. Wilson urged increased protection, say SO or 25 per cent., on malt flour extract preparations imported from 'Australia. Messrs J. Greenfield and J. Neil, representing tho Sugar of Milk and Casein industries, protested against the railway freight on muriatic acid and also against having to pay tho same railage on low grade coal as on best grade. Mr Wilde asked for the same protection for the felt hat industry as obtained in Australia. He thought the Arbitration Court should not interfere with the wages of workers who competed against overseas labour unless the tariff were regulated accordingly. Mr J. B. Shacklock expressed the opinion that tho industries New Zealand should develop were those closely associated with primary products of the soil.
