The corporation also passed the following motion:—That this corporation is unanimusly of opinion that technical schools are, as. lar as the trades are concerned successful in the theoretical knowledge imparted to pupils, but in regard to the practical training the workshop of the employer is the only place to equip the apprentice with the practical knowledge necessary for a successful career, as the opportunity is very much greater than that acquired in the school, where such variety does not exist. We cordially approve of the proposal to grant bonuses to apprentices who have passed a satisfactory examination, such bonuses to be as follow : That employers undertake to pay all class fees. That bonuses be paid for first-class certificates as follow:—For first year 2s tier week, second year 3s, third year 4s, fourth year ss. ior second-class certificates, tne following scale of bonuses is recommended: —First Year Is, second year 2s, third year 3s, fourth year 4s. The meeting is further of opinion that the desire for time off in the short day of the industry in this country is not desirable .for the boy owing to the break in Ms practice and Btudv, and the break that occurs in the trade concerned as he becomes more The conference passed a resolution that urgent representations be made to the Government- to place an export ow of at least 5s per cent, per hundred feet on all timbers' exported from the Dominion.
