Nelson, formerly.vicar of St. Paul's Church, Auckland, and ex-Registrar of the Auckland University, underwent an operation -on Saturday, and is reported to be progressing as favourably as can be expected. . Mr FJ. W. Relph, manager ■of the New. Zealand Farmers' Co-operative 'Association of Canterbury, and Mr J. Jamieson. of Messrs J. and W. Jamieson, left Christchurch this week for England via Wellington, where they will spend about six months. Sir' Jaines Allen, Acting-Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, left for Napier yesterday to open the military ward of the Napier Hospital, also the Y.M.C.A. and Red Cross rooms, which have been erected by those associations for the use of the-soldiers in the hospital. The Minister is due back in Wellington on Saturday evening. • Dr N. McDougall. honorary actincradiologist to the Auckland Hospital, was granted twelve months' leave of absence by ' the Auckland Hospital ' Board. • Dr McDougall intends visiting America and Great Britain for health reasons, and while abroad will study the latest methods employed in radiology and medical electricity. Mr Frank Puckey, interpreter in the Auckland Native Land Court for many years past; is about to retire on superannuation. Mr Puckey is a son of the late Rov. Mr Puckey, of Kaitaia, North Auckland, and was at one time stationed in Wellington. He is a brother of Mr El W. Puckey, an exJudge of the'Native Land Court. Major J. Seabrook, of the Royal Air Force, son of Mr A. T>. Seabrook, of Auckland, lias been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Major Seabrook is at present in a military hospital in England, recovering from serious injuries received in an aerial collision in the Bast, when he was in command of a flying squadron. Advice has been received from the Defence Department, Auckland, that Mr Benjamin Charles ' Baxter, a discharged soldier, died at the Auckland Hospital annexe on February 18th, 1919, from, cholelithasis and toxaemia. He wa6 forty-sis years .of age, and married, the next-of-kin being his wife, Mrs Lilfy Maud Baxter, of St. Heliers Bay. Second-Lieutenant S. Frickleton, V.C., New Zealand Rifle Brigade, having been struck off the strength of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, has been appointed Assistant-Provost Marshal, Wellington Military District, and granted the temporary rank of lieutenant whilst so employed. Captain "W. Watson, M.C., has been appointed A.P.M., Auckland Military District. After fifty-two years of Bervice in educational, work, Mr James Milne, M.A., inspector of schools under the"* Wanganui Education Board, will retire towards the end of March next. In 1988 Mr Milne received his first appointment in New Zealand as schoolmaster at Waitotara. In 1895 he was appointed inspector under Mr Vereker Bindon, and after that. gentleman's death he became inspector. v Information was received on Saturday last by Mrs Twinamo, Parnell, advising her that her son ( Charles W. Twiname, had. .gained his commission as a lieutenant. Lieutenant Twiname left New Zealand in June, 1916, with the 14th Reinforcement, and served with the 16th Waikato Company in France-. Prior to leaving New Zealand, Lieutenant Twiname represented Briscoe and Co., Ltd,., in the Goldfields and Waikato districts. ' Mr I. W. Raymond, formerly of Invercargill, who has been a prominent worker in London in connection with the New Zealand War Contingent Association, was seriously ill three months ago, but according to the "British Australasian" of December 12th he had recovered nod resumed his activities in the War Contingent Association. The illness—an attack of inflenza —compelled Mr-. Raymond to withdraw his candidature for the Carlisle seat in the. House of Commons. At the previous general election, Mr Raymond lost this seat by only a.few votes.

On "Wednesday the death of Mr Robert Birch occurred at his residence in his 78tTi year. He was born at Northam, Derbyshire, where he served his apprenticeship as a shipwright and afterwards went to sea. He made many trips between New Zealand and England in the Helen Denny, bjit left that vessel in-1874 to settle in Wellington, remaining here until his death. He was connected with many largo public works, and hip tireless energy earned tho respect and admiration of all who came in contact with him. In later years he was attached to the shore staff of the Union Steam Ship Company, until his retirement some sixteen years a'po. His genial personality, will bo missed by a larse circle of friends. He leave? a widow, three „sons, .five daughters,' anil eighteen grandchildren. The funeral took place yesterday, the interment being made at Karori. The Rev. Mr Page, of St. Mark's, conducted the service. Mair, who described Mr Ferguson as the father of the society. Mr John I. Fox. formerly secretary of the Returned Soldiers' Club, will leave Wellington for England on Monday. He hopes to be able to visit France and Germany, and on his return to the Dominion may take up politics. Members of the Civil Service Club ; me"t in large numbers on Tuesday evening to bid farewell to Mr 'A. Daniel, for many years manager of the : club, who, after a term of service in , camp, is about to go into business at Blenheim. In presenting Mr Daniel with a purse of sovereigns, Mr C. G. Wilson, chairman of the committee, paid a high tribute to the many excellent qualities displayed by Mr Daniel during his long term of and to his unfailing courtesy to members, and his solid administrative ability. All of them, he said, sincerely regretted Mr Daniel's departure, and wished hire , success in Ms new venture. On Tuesday last, Sergeant-Major ~Ek Bezar celebrated his 81st birthday at his residence in Wellington. He served at Malta, in the Crimean War, at Aden during the Indian Mutiny, in India in j 1860, and was then ordered' to New \ Zealand with his regiment. Be fought! through the Maori Wars of 1861 and 1863. He took his discharge from the regiment in 1867, and was appointed sergeant-major of militia and volunteers at Wanganui in the following year.
