PROBLEM-SOLVING TOURNAMENT.
The Good Companion Chess Problem Club of America is holdinu its annual solving competitions all over the world next Saturday (Georire Washington's birthday). A dozen book prises have been sent from America for the New Zealand competitions, which are to be held simultaneously in Dunedm, Christchurch. Auckland, and Wellington. The local contest takes place at the Y.M.C.,1. rooms on Saturday evening. It. la not confined to club members, but is open to all chesH players 1 and there is no entrance fee. Each competitor i» allowed the use' of a board and set of chessmen. He is also provided with .ft.sheet on which are printed the twelve, two-, move problems to be solved; and a result sheet" on which to record the solutions. ' Two ■ hours and a. > hair | are allowed for the solving. In the event of a tie the priif will, of-course, be allotted to the solver who used the lesser" amount Of time. Mr C will- act'as--super-visor for the local contest. It may b& added that the Good Companion Chess Problem Club.waa founded in Philadelphia. U.S.A., six years ago. It has Brown linto a bin concern from a modest 'bPßinninK. and it now has members in almost every country where chess is. plaved, to sav nothing of outlying islanda (Socletv Islands, Chathams, etc.). The opeminu round of the above club's, annual championship tourney resulted as follows:—G. P. Anderson 1 v. A. Clark 0. Purehas 1 v: H. .T. Thompson 0. Harrier 1 v. S. Faulknor 0, and Wei-, ton Iv. Berrv 0. Messrs' Mulvey, Eno, and Lauehton scored wins, in the supplcmentarv tourney, in which the fixtures P"v. Bra Idock'v. Fi'shor. and Ash' bv v. Robbiis stand adjourned.
