Sir James Allen arrived back from the south yesterday .by the Maori. Councillor Taylor, of tine Makara County Council, has been granted two months' leave of absence. Mr WV A. Hector Bolitho, of Auckland, formerly editor of the "Featherston Camp Weekly," is at present in Wellington, and staying at the Empire Hotel. Mr H. Askew, Vicar of St. Mark's parish, is leaving for England next week for the purpose of furthering the Wellington Cathedral movement, and will be accompanied by Mrs Askew. On Tuesday evening their parishioners will give them a send-off social and presentation. The Military Medal has been surrrded to Corporal C. T. Munro'., of Otago. Corporal Munro served with distinction in the Boer War. He enlisted for the present war in 1916. and was wounded during .the German offensive in May last. Lieutenant Coles, who was well known, in Wellington as a prominent footballer, was initiated into the art of flying at the Auckland Flying School. Ho is the son of Mr A. Coles, of Petone,' who served with the forces in New. Zealand. Mr T. M. Gault, chief clerk on thi, staff of the Soldiers' Financial Assistance Board, on the eve of his departure from the service of the board,'- was farewelled by his staff .-yid presented with a gold watch, a pipe,; and a tobacco pouch. The presentation was made by the secretary Mr S. J. Wills, who referred in very complimentary • terms to Mr Gault's loyalty and the creditable manner in which he had carried out his arduous duties. Mr Wills stated that the board was deeply indebted to Mr Gault for his services, and wished him every success. Mr Gault, who has accepted' the position of secretary and accountant to the City Carriage and Motor Works, Ltd., Buitahly replied. ':■ . '

• Lieutenant-Colonel J. H. Whyt«, D.S.O D.C.M.. N.Z.S.C., who commanded the Wellington Mounted Rifles Regiment in tjje Sinai-Palestine campaign, returned to Wellington by the Moeraki on Thursday. Colonel Whyte, when 'war broke out, -was Brigade-Ma-jor to the Wellington Mounted Rifles Brigade, being stationed at Palmerston North, and proceeded with the Main Body to Bgypt. He fought throughout tho Gallipoli and Sinai-Palestino campaigns, and for his distinguished services was given command of the Wellington Regiment in the famous Anzac Mounted Division. He was awarded the D.S.O. in 1915, and in 1917 received a bar to the distinction. He returns to New Zealand with the reputation <f being a brilliant leader in the field who was well-loved by his men.
