clay,' "treasurer a.of th©< New Zealand Tribute to France*‘-Fund. ’who handed to Mr Massey a cheque for £7450 payable to Madame Carpet,,, president of the French Red Cross, and also _ a ciieque for £76od payable to the Minister for Foreign*- Affairs in Paris for distribution to French orphans, “maisons claires.” and Wind soldiers. This represents a total' ‘ contribution of .tij,6oo, and is the . first instalment payable from the New Zealand Tribute to t rance Fund.
Tho term, .“maisons nlaires” is used to- denote- spedal institutions in which mo French people have cared for tho orphans of soldiers who have been killed 1 on active service or whose father is at tho front and mother is dead. These houses have been' opened for tho relief of such - children find are scattered oil over France; being maintained by voluntary subscription. Mr Masaev has arranged for tho contributions to 'bo cabled immediately to the High Comrpisfiipner for New Zealand, who, will arrange for payment of tho remittances in Paris.
