£3 6s A TON CHARGED.
A newspaper report that coal-dealers who were required to supply equal quantities of lignite and black coal to customers ordering coal, were charging as much for-the lignite as for the ordinary coal, was brought/ under the notice of the Minister in the House, of Representatives yesterday by Mr G. Wittyi' member for Itiocarton. Would the MihistCr.'he 'asked, see that for the future -ilk’was' not allowed. Mr J. McCombs (Lyttelton).: They are charging a higher price for lignite. ' The Hon. W-. I). S.. MacDonald replied that the Board of Trade was making a thorough investigation into the coal question. Mr Witty: They’re a long time about it, Mr MacDonald said * that, unfortunately, all "the members of the hoard were laid up in Christchurch with influenza. They had comnleted the whole of the North Island, and all the South Island except the West Coast; and as soon as they recovered they would proceed to the West Coast and complete the investigation... The whole question of production,,,transport, prices, etc., was being gone into. ... i*xr Witty: £3 6s a ton is being charged for half coal and half lignite.
