EXCITEMENT AT SEA
MAORI LOSES A PROPELLER BLADE.
Considerable excitement was occasioned on board the turbine steamer Maori on Saturday night during the passage from Lyttelton to Wellington through a. violent tremor shaking the vessel from stem to stern for two or three minutes, as the result of one of the blades dropping off- the centre propeller.
Many of the passengers ' had retired to their bunks when, at 9.30. p.m., a severe jarring and vibration aroused everyone. Tho shaking was felt more severely in the steerage aft, and for a few minutes a mild panic ensued, as some , people believed that the Maori had struck a mine. On being promptly reassured by the ship.’s staff, and the’ vibration haying ceased, the passengers returned to their berths. The Maori, having three propellers, was only slightly delayed through one propeller being, disabled, and she made port at 9.25 am. yesterday. The vessel, will not receive any cargo at Wellington to-day, as, after disembarking her passengers at Lyttelton tomorrow morning, sh© will go into dock at that port to have the damaged propeller removed, and a spare one fitted. 'The damaged propeller is three-bladed and in one piece. -The Maori will leave Lyttelton as usual to-morrow evening for Wellington. .
