PETONE FIRE BOARD
The annual meeting of the Potone Eire Board was held yesterday. There were present: Messrs J. W. McEwajx (cnairman), T. G. B. Ching, H. E. Kempthorne and C. D. Binit h. Mr J. W. Mcßwan was elected chairman for the ensuing year. The Petone Council intimated that red glass would be placed in the lamps whore tiro alarms, were situated. Tho Department of Internal Affairs, in answer to n communication, said no provision had been made to enable lire boards to create reserve funds, but that tho Minister was making tho necessary provision. A further letter was received from the Government stating that an increase in tho subsidy could not bo considered until after the duration of the war. The Superintendent reported that the borough had been very free from fires., There had been thirteen alarms during the year, five of which proved to be false ones. The damage to property by fire was £290 10s, and that was covered by insurance amounted to .£2BO. The brigade was being depleted by** members being called up for active service. Tho plant was in good condition. Inspector Hugo s report, which was submitted, showed tho brigade and plant to bo satisfactory in every way. The estimates for tho year amounted to £877 5s lOd, and were approved. The mortgage on tho fire station amounted to £1950.
