TEACHERS’ SALARIES
STRONG PROTEST BY EDUCATION BOARD. Notification of increases in the re* muneration of pupil teachers, proba* tioners, and training college was conveyed by letter to the monthly mooting of the Education Board yesterday. A paper was presented to the board comparing the new salaries and 1 the salaries paid to Government cadets in other branches of the Public Service. This paper showed that while a pupil teacher commences at £4O a year, the Government cadet was in receipt ol £65 a year, and after four years re* ceivod £l2O a. year. After four years the pupil teacher received £6O a year, or £BS a year with lodging allowt ance. Strong comment was made by mom* hers on the anomalies revealed in this paper. It would have a detrimental effect in keeping the ranks of the teaching profession full. Finally, on the motion of the Hon. J. G. W. Aitken, it was decided to call the attention of the department to the anomalies that exist between the salaides paid to teachers and those paid to cadets in the Public Service, also to thank the department for the in* creases made.
