A PIECE OF BAD MEAT

CAUSES CONCERN AND A COURT CASE. Mr F. V. Frazer, S.M., had to de* cide in the Magistrate's Court yesterday whether a piece of moat fnol produced) was fit for the table or only fit for burial. Hubert Robinson was charged with, selling unwholesome meat to Warrick Lumlcy. The police ovrt denco was that Lumley had exhibited a niece, of mutton to two oonstablesi who w ere positive that it smelt very strong, was green, slimy, and fly' blown. Lumley said he had bought the meat from Parkin’s butcher’s shop that morning. When he had taken it hack they had refused to return his money. Mr J. A. Tripe, who represented Robinson, closely questioned the coni stables as to whether the meat was really mutton, and whether it was actually bad. He suggested that the constables would make a hotter hand at the meat with a knife and fork than in deciding whether it was roL ten or not. He asked one constable whether he heard how the piece* ol mutton was enjoyed for Sunday dim ner. The constable replied that the landlady who had been presented with the meat by Lumley had prompt! ly buried it in the garden. For the defence Mr Tripe said th« meat was not mutton, but lamb, and. was perfectly fit for consumption. Th« Bench decided that the meat was a bit “over the odds,” hilt the case was not one that called for a severe pern alty. Robinson, was fined <£3, witE costs 9s.

Inspector Mnrsaok said Parkin’s shop was known as a very clean one, and bad given no cause of complaint he* fore.
