EDUCATION BOARD

BUSINESS AT MONTHLY MEETING. ■ The ordinary meeting of the Wellington Education Board was held yesterday. There were present: The Hon. J. G. W. Aitken (in the chair), Messrs W. H. Field, M.P., A. W. Hogg, G. T. London, E. P. Risk worth, E. H. Penney, andiT.i-EorsYth.^ A request was received from the Nelson Education Board for co-operation in representations to the department with a view to provision of increased capitation payments. The board expressed itself in sympathy with the move.

Applications were received, from the Maranui and Manuhara Schools, asking for changes of the names of the schools to Lyall Bay and Maku respectively. The application was granted. It was decided to ask for the release of teachers engaged in non-combatant service.

The Department of Education advised the following grants for additions to schools:—Hutt D.H.S. £567, Eastern Hutt £BO4, Plimmerton £697. A letter was received! from the Government in regard to grants for relieving teachers, stating that the Education Department is unable to recognise the claim towards a grant for the deficiency' in the Believing Teachers’ Fund.

The monthly statement of accounts, records, and receipts since last meeting was given as £16,375 15s 4d; the total payments to ho authorised as £18,053 Os sd; cash in bank on. current account at June 15th, £6142 7s lid; amount on deposit, £9000; Gov- 1 ernment grants now due, £8226 14s lOd,

The secretary reported that the accommodation at the Solway School had proved inadequate. It was decided to apply to the department for a grant for the work.

A unanimously signed petition was received, asking for increased accommodation at the Hataitai School. It was decided to send on the petition to the Rosencath and Kilbirnio School Committees.
