CHRISTCHURCH COUNCILLORS

HAVE DEBATE ON WAR TROPHIES. "MUSEUM IS THE PROPER PLACE FOR THEM." I'ress Association. CHRISTCHURCTxI, June 17. At the City Council meeting to-night a lotter was read from General Sir Alfred Robin, Commandant of th© Forces, announcing that certain trophies of the war had been allotted to Christchuroh. Tho trophies had been captured by the First Canterbury Regiment and the Third Battalion Rifle Brigade. Councillor D. G. Sullivan (Labour member) said he did not think it was tho desire of tho council or people of this city or tho people of No*- Zealand to take any steps to perpetuate the spirit of militarism as tho outcome of tho war. If trophies should go anywhere, let them go to the museum. Tho aim of the Allies was to put an end to militarism in all its forms, and he claimed that by putting these trophies in a rmblic place it would not assist this. He moved 1 : "That the Commandant of the Forces bo written to thanking him for tho offer, and it be suggested to him that the proper place for those things is the Canterbury Museum." Councillor Flesher moved as an amendment:"That the offer of the Commandant be accepted by tho council, and the reserves committee be instructed to-, find a convenient place for them." After a brief discussion, the Mayor said no good purpose could be served by prolonging discussion, and put the amendment, which was carried by 12 to 5, the, minority being Labour members.
