GIRLS' COLLEGE SPORTS
A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION INTERESTING PROGRAMME OF RACES. The grounds at the Wellington Girls/ College looked very bright and attractive yesterday, on the occasion of the annual sports. The trees and lawns were at their greenest, and the many girls, in their white frocks, and visitors, parents, and friends gave a holiday air to the scene. The entries for the various races were many, and it ..was. noticeable how keen tho girls wore -over their sport. The high jump and’ long jump wore quite difficult tents,'and were watched with interest. The long races had been, as usual, ruri off before tho sports day, and the races to entertain the visitors were leap frog, thread the needle, threelegged race, 'sack race, hopping race, -and obstacle race, which always cause much amusement. The -pots’ race is also a favourite event, while to the girls themselves, tho old girls’, sfafl, and visitors’ races are popular itenis of the afternoon. As has been their custom since the war, the girls of tho college made tho occasion a money-making one for patriotic purposes, and had stalls for tho sale ot flowers, produce, sweets, etc- Programmes . were sold, and buttonholes and sweets by many of tho girlsAfternoon tea was served in the large school hall, tables being set, with chairs, .. to the great comfort and convenience of the guests. . The arrangements were good,, and the girls 'who served wore very quick in looking after the guests. Miss McLean, the head mistress, received tho guests, among whom was the Mayor, Mr J. P. Luae, C. Mrs Luke was unable to be present this year. The directors of the sports were Miss Mackenzie (sports mistress) and Miss Ramsay-Snuth (drill instructress). Tho starters were f » M. Luckie, Misses Mackenzie, ana Eamsay-Smith; judges. Misses B a thorn, MoDiarmid, and Mine, and Messrs Watkins, Ellis, and Badden. The secretary for the occasion was Miss Ward, and the treasurer Miss Newman. Afternoon tea wa a in charge of Misses Cameron, Ward, Lynch, Gibson, Howes and- Kennedy; swee-fa, Misses Alien, Smith' and -Goad; . flowers, Musses Rainfbrth, Collins,. Arlington Koss, and Mrs Crisp; Old Carls stall (pio due A, Misses Newman, Martin ana, Norton. Assistance was given at tne gate and in other ways by Messrs Judd; Phelps, and Johnson. _ The general committee of girls responsible for the arrangement of tne fete consisted'of:—Misses oheila i aokenzic, Helen E-astcrfield, Esm e Geddis Jessie ‘ Grant, Myra Alexander, Noel Ellis, Lott-y Skinner, M>nme Pitkoweky, Talmas Gore, Eileen Smith Mari© Ashworth, Gwen Beggs, Daisy Donnelly, and Hazel Rawle.
