TRAGEDY AT THAMES
LITTLE GIRL DROWNED IN A CREEK. SERIOUS CHARGE AGAINST BOYS, Frees Ablactation, * THAMES.. July 24, To-day the coroner resumed the inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of Irene Quinn, the six-year-old daughter of Mr Quinn, J.P., who was drownbd last week at Konkert, near Kopn.. ,', .. Dr Derrick said he had made an examination of the body and was convinced that death was caused by drowning. . The evidence of various witnesses showed that the little girl had been seen coming homo from school with a Maori hoy, Richard Reihana, and a European boy, Edward Claude Gibbons. They were seen going to the bank of the Kerikeri creek. Afterwards both boys were seen going homo alone. The girl’s clothes were found on the bank 'and her naked body was recovered the nest day. It was proved that the girl could not undress herself. . The' .boy Gibbons made * statement to the effect that Reihana undressed the. girl and put her in the water. Reihana’s statement was that tbs girl was on the bank of the creek naked when he saw her and she fell in.
The verdict will be announced tomorrow.
