BENEFIT FEND. Yesterday afternoon a small deputation waited on the Mayor, who £ad already moved in the direction mdicated. to offer the services of the various leading local artists for any benefit that might he arranged for the widow and seven children of the late W. ]?. Fitzgerald, who lost bis luc owing to a fall of earth at Roseneath during last Saturday’s storm. It was immediately decided that a benefit, to take the form of a popular concert, be held in the large Town Hall on Tuesday next. Last evening a meeting of the interested parties w r as held, when the necessary committees for the successful carrying out of the scheme were formed, under the joint secretaryship of Messrs A. J. Carlton and Phippswilliams. Tickets .will be on sale at the various shops, and it is anticipated that the public will give this very deserving case its generous support. The committee unanimously decided to personally defray all i-Se expenses, handing the gross proceeds to the beneficiaries. A fund is also being raised by Mr Len Tingoy, ot the firm of Messrs R. and E. Tmgey, Ltd., in whose service the deceased had been for a number of years, who will act as treasurer of the fund tor the present, and will be glad to receive subscriptions. The employees of the firm are to collect under his supervision. The town clerk has issued a permit l o the Wellington Patriotic Band (late Jupp’s) to ploy at Newtown Park next Sunday in aid of the fund. The “Charley’s Aunt” Company also propose, to assist in raising funds. The funeral took place yesterday, and was largely attended. Amongst those present wer Messrs Richard and Len Tingey and their firm’s staff, and also a large number of the Painters and Decorators’ Society.
