Having completed her repairs the Westport Harbour Board dredge Eileen Ward got away from Wellington at 10.45 a.m. yesterday for Westport. The coastal steamer John, due at Wellington this morning from Wanganui, haw 150 bales of wool fo put out here. M r El Stein late, second officer of the Atun, arrived from Auckland by the Tarawcrn yesterday as extra officer. Ho will join the Mo.nowai as second officer. Cathie, Dempster and Co. advise that the coastal steamer- Wootton is due at Petone shortly with a load of sheep from Breton. After discharge the vessel will go to tile Sounds. The Tutanekai was loading stores at Picton on Monday. Tho recent foggy weather has prevented the vessel from picking up tho broken ends of the cable. The Auxiliary scow Magic- left New Plymouth early yesterday morning for Puponga to load coal for Sandy Bay. From the latter place the vessel will return to Wellington with a cargo of stone. THE OREPTJKI. The coastal steamer Orepuki arrived at Wellington last evening from Turakohe. and berthed at No. 13, south, Queen’s wharf, to put out 50 tons of cement. The vessel is to sail at noon to-day for Lyttelton and Timaru, taking cargo for those ports. THE HINEMOA, The Government steamer Hinemoa finished lauding at the East Cape lighthouse yesterday morning, and sailed at midday for Mercury Bay, where she will tako soundings in tho channel to-day and overhaul beacons. The vessel will then proceed on to Cuvier Island lighthouse where she is due to-morrow morning, and is expected at Auckland tomorrow night. THE SCOW EUNICE. The New Zealand Refrigerating Co.’s scow Eunice is expected at Wellington to-morrow morning with a load of pro. dueo from Lyttelton. Cathie. TRAWLER’S ODD EXPERIENCE. An adventure befell tho crew of the New South Wales Slate trawler GununUaui recently. Air A. J. Cross, master of the vessel, has reported to the general manager of tho trawlers that at 8 o'clock in the evening as lliev were about to heave up tho trawl, tho ship slowed down, owing to net striking some obstruction. "We hovo up at once, and. ou getting the net up. wo found the jawbone and about 15 feet of the backtjono of a whale in it. Wo lifted this to tho water’s edge, but could get it no higher, as the jawbone alone measured fully 13ft by 10ft. We managed to get a strap round it, and lifted it clear of the net. The jawbone weighed fully two tons.” "The net was badly torn, but not beyond repair. If the hot had not been a new' one it would never have lifted it.” Air Stead considers it probable that the whale was a victim, to the great "killers” or killer whales, which frequently operate on this coast, and that the “jawbone” referred to would bo tho upper jawbone with attached skull. Owing to being 12 hours late in leaving Sydney the Manuka did not arrive at Wellington until 1.30 o’clock yesterday morning. The vessel anchored in the stream until daybreak, and then berthed at No. C, Queen's wharf at 7 a.m. yesterday. The Manuka loft Sydney' at 1 a.m. Friday, and had fine weather with light variable winds until arrival. The vessel brought the following cargo: —1270 pieces timber, 520 sleepers, 393 chests tea 231 bars load, 155 casus jam from Hobart, 136 bags bark, 42 cases marble, 2i slabs marble, 49 cases tobacco, oO piles, 100 bags rice, 185 bags linseed meal, 20 cases champagne, 75 cases sulphuric acid, 96 bugs p.eameal, i2 sacks 334 sacks flour, and 160 cases fruit. The Manuka left Wellington last night for Lyttelton, from which port she is due back here to-mox-yow morning. The departure of the vessel on the return trip to Sydney and Hobart has been postponed until 2 p.m. on Friday.

WANGANUI MISHAPS. Two shipping mishaps occurred at the Wanganui town wharf shortly beioie midnight on Sunday night, the Harbour Board's small punt, laden with coal, being swamped, and the tug logo getting adrift and becoming jammed under the town bridge. It appears that both occurrences " ere discovered simultaneously. ihe logo was caught by the funnel in the bridge superstructure, and the Hood tide caused tho vessel to take a big list. The tug’s whistle was sounded for assistance, but in the meantime a few of the wharf staff managed, by pulling on the towline, to get the tug into a safer position and out of danger. A Alaori launch was moored beside tho Togo earlier in the evening, and H is surmised that when tli© > launch left towards midnight the natives inadvertently' let go tho tug’s stern line, causing the Togo to swing round.
