MAORI CONTINGENTERS
1217 AT FRONT. 31l IN CAMP. A return, prepared on the motion of the Hob. A. X. hi gat a (Eastern Maori District), was laid on the table Of the House of Representatives yesterday by the Minister for Defence (the Hon. J. Allen). The return shows that the number of Maoris who left with the first Maori Contingent Of the Expeditionary force Was 018; 2nd Contingent, 311; 3rd, 314; 4tn, 74; total, ixl7. In addition, there were in training at Narrow Neck ,150 Maoris and 114 half-castes; at Feathersten, 10 Maoris and 13 hsifcastes; and at. Trentham, 8 Maoris, and 10 half-castes; total in eamp as at May 31st, 311. Mr Allen added that the figures did.not include Niue Islanders or other natives, but Maoris and half-caste Maoris only. He could not supply a list of the Maoris who' bad left with other than Maori contingents. as that would mean going through 60,000 files, and many of the Maoris also had enlisted under European names.
