ASSAULT-AT-ARMS

To-morrow there should he witnessed one of the biggest gatherings at Newtown Park of which there is yet any record, the occasion being the grand assafilt-at-arms and athletic display in aid of the fund for sick and wounded soldiers. Apart from the object, which is sufficient in itself to commend the function to public patronage, thero will he a programme of stirring ana sensational events that challenge com petition. The outstanding features, no doubt, .will be the performance of Captain L. McLagleu, tho well-known bayonet and physical instructor. - One of his “turns will he an attempt to lower his own world’s record by cutting eight sheep in half with a sword at a single gallop. Another display which he will give will he that of withstanding the combined pulling power of two draught horses! In addition there will he a variety of military contests, in bayonet work, jiu jitsu, tug-of-war and wrestling on horseback, and so on, besides a grand march-past, and a magnificent sham battle. Tho programme will be opened by massed hands at 2.30 p.m., and there will he a further exhibition in the evening. With tho price of admission fixed at one shilling, there is no reason (provided tho weather is suitable) why the park should not be crowded.
