WHALERS UPSET
EXCITING ADVENTURE IN 000 K. STRAIT. Frets Association. PICTON, July 11. An exciting whaling adventure befell a Picton party on Friday evening. Two motor-boats (Belinda and Crescent), owned by Mr C. Perano, chased two whales into Cook Strait. Both were harpooned, and the Berlinda towed her prize in t» the shore. The Crescent’s whale, however, got underneath the boat and lifted it out of the water. The craft immediately began to swamp, water covering the engine. The whale was cut adrift, and the party (Consisting of two, Jacksons and Toms) put up a sail and began baling the water out with kerosene tins.
They were six miles out at this time, and when just about swamped, another motor-boat went out to the rescue. The Orescent’s crew had a very narrow escape. The boat was considerably knocked about, and the engine ruined. Mr Perano’s party has secured fifteen whales in the last two months, the oil of which is valued at about £3OOO.
