RUSSIAN OPERATIONS
A MORE FAVOURABLE SITUATION The Premier has received, the following from the High Commissioner,: — LONDON, May 15, 3.40 a.m. In the region of Shavlx the fighting is favourable to the Russians. During the day upwards of one thousand Germans were made, prisoner. In western* Galicia the intensity of the fighting has lessened. The Russians are concentrating their line on the river San with a view to occupying a shorter front. On Tuesday the Austrians evacuated a strongly-fortified position from Bystritza to the Roumanian frontier, on a length of one hundred and. forty versts (ninety miles) and on Wednesday fell hack precipitately beyond the river Pruth. r . The Russian fire -dispersed the enemy’s cavalry, which was aaenheed to protect the general retreat. The Russian cavalry broke the enemy s front at various points and threw the marching columns into disorder. A vigorous pursuit continues.
