SENSATIONAL REPORT

There are several interesting messages relative to the Allies’ operations in the western fields. One of these declares that the German offensive has reached a desperate phase. The enemy continues to hurl reckless attacks in close formation with disastrous results. The plain before Ypres is a charnelhouse covered with German dead. The British line is stronger than ever. Wounded German soldiers assert that the situation at Ypres is critical for the Germans. . Altogether, the Allies appear;to be progressing favourably. Bather startling, and belated, news comes from Italy to the effect that on May 4th Italy renounced the treaty of the Triple Alliance relating to Austria, and also concluded a treaty with the Entente. It is likewise alleged that the President of the Chamber has been entrusted with the forma--tion of a national Ministry, and has conferred-with the recent Premier, Bignor Salandra, and the leader of the Opposition, Signor Giohtti. There has been desperate fighting in the Dardanelles. The Allies dislodged the Turks from the heights of Krithia. On the hills behind Kilid Bahr and Maidos the Allies are pushing the Turks steadily back. The Allies’ preparations at Tenedos and Lemnos to reinforce their troops are said to be colossal. The news from the eastern battlefields reveals a situation more favourable to the Russians.,
