WAR CORRESPONDENT

CONDITIONS OF THE APPOINTMENT ISSUED. The following conditions have been issued by the Government with reference to the position of official war correspondent, applications for which are now being called: — “1. Tho selection in New Zealand wf a correspondent is subject to confirmation by the Imperial Government, and until such confirmation tho provisional appointment will not lake effect. “2. The correspondent, after confirmation of his appointment, will bo required to leave iNcw Zealand for citner Egypt or England as the Government may direct, and at such tube as tho Government may direct. A return saloon passage to and from either Egypt or England will be provided at tlio com' 01 tno Government. In the event of tfie first passage being to Egypt, tho cost of tho subsequent voyages to and from England will also bo so provided, “!S. Tho correspondent is in all matters to bo subject to tho direction of the New Zealand Government and of the High Commissioner for New Zealand, and must comply with any tpccific directions received. “4. His principal duties wall be to remain as near as possible to tho New Zealand forces at tho scat of war, and to write regularly detailed accounts of events in which tho New Zealand' forces arc engaged, and of matters of especial interest to New Zealand and tno New Zealand forces. If tho New Zealand forces are divided into several sections he will be expected to travel, if permitted by the war authorities, from section to section, *o ifiat general information as to all tho -Now Zealand forces may bo obtained. . , , “5. Tho despatches scat to the High Commissioner by post or telegraph will bo transmitted by the High Commissioner to Now Zealand. The reasonable cost of such telegrams will be allowed. This condition opplies * only when the correspondent is with the forces on the Continent of Europe or in Great Britain or Ireland, When in Egypt tho correspondent is to send bis despatches regularly by,course of, post addressed to tho Department of Internal, Affairs, Wellington, Now Zealand. In this case ho will not use either cable or telegraph. “ 7. He will he paid a salary at the •ate of £450 per annum from the date > «f his appointment until the date of lis return to Now Zealand. “8. He will receive allowances at i(ho rate of los per day except when vith the forces on the Continent of Suropo or when actually in. Egypt. In Egypt ho will receive allowances of £1 is per diem. When it tho teat of war in any part ’ of the Continent of En;ope the allowance will be £2 10s per ilicm. , “9. The Government reserves the irght to terminate tho appointment at my time upon one month’s notice to tie correspondent, who, in that event, nnst .return to New Zealand, and will Jp paid his salary until a reasonable epproximato date for his arrival, in Ifew Zealand,>*ll. Tho correspondent is expected, il his dispatches and otherwise, to provide material to be used ultimately for a history of the part taken by tho New Zealand troops in the war. He is therefore expected to make himself acquainted generally with the dispositionj of all Imperial forces arid also of th« ( ‘ enemy at points Where the New Zealand forces are associated. , 12. It is impossible to define, with complete accuracy in advance, all the duties’of the correspondent, and it is, therefore, a necessary condition that the Government has power to add other conditions and directions to those above stated. Generally, tho correspondent is to supply news from the seat of war of special interest to New Zealand of the nature generally supplied by press correspondents at the war; and also to supply material ultimately for a history of the part taken by the New Zealand troops, and is to be subject to tho orders and directions the New Zcalarid Government and of the High Commissioner.”
