LABOUR AND THE ELECTIONS
Special to the "Times.'' CHRISTCHURCH, October 6. "I agree with the suggestion that there should be an understanding arrived at between Labour and Liberal forces," said Mr Hiram Hunter, national president of the Social Democratic party, in an interview to-day. "I cannot agree, however that the ©mancipation of Labour lies along the lines which have been suggested by several members of Parliament. They suggest that the Social Democratic party should practically abandon its activities and rely on Liberalism at this election. If anything is to be done to bring about co-operation between Labour and Liberalism the Labour forces must be gjven full credit for the strength of their vote at the last election. If the Liberal party believes in proportional representation it should bo prepared to make a sacrifice to ensure the success of progressiva candidates, I think it is reasonable for the Social Democratic party to contend that the Liborals should withdraw their candidates where there is a strong labour vote. As a set-off the S D. P. would undertake to give active support to Liberal candidates in constituencies where there were no Labour candidates" .
