There is a great shortage of hurdle horses in Austrulia at the present time. As soon as war was declared in England Mr Leopold de Rothschild sent all his horses out of training, and they will remain in the paddocks at Leighton Bizzard until hostilities have ceased. Mr Rothschild has a very extensive stud, as there are 38 mares in his Southcourt stud, as well as the stallions St. Frusquin (son of St. Simon), Radium (6on of Bend Or), St. Ainant (son of St. Frusquin), Day Comet (son of St. Frusquin), Satorino, and Iron Grey (son of Andover). We are informed, says an English exchange, that Mr Duryea'e colt Durbar 11., the winner of this year's Derby, has finished his racing career/ an<s will now be sent to the stud. Since his victory at Epsom the colt has been beaten several times in. his native country, his principal conqueror being Sardanaple. by Prestige, who is claimed to be the best three-year-old in France or any other European country this year. Mention of Durbar 11. calls to memory the fact that the locally-owned colt. Mohawk, who is very closely related to the Derby winner on the dam's side is to join Ratcliff's string within a few days when that mentor removes to his new stables at North Invercargill. Mohawk may be given a run at one of the Southland autumn meetings. C. Emmerson will ride Rencontre and Nones at the Ihvnedin meeting. Sir Geotge Clifford's Veritas ie to be added to the gelding list. Through the success of Mountain Knight on "Saturday. Mr 'B. J. Watt became the third New Zealand owner to capture the Australian Jockey Club's Derby. Mr D. O'Brien was the first, but lie had been a resident of Sydney for some time when he won in. 1895 with the Australian-bred gelding, Bob Ray. The late Mr G. G. Stead' won in 1905 with Noctuiform, whose time, 2min 32Jsec, is still on easy record for the race. The' "Lyttelbon Times" eaya that Mr E, J. Watt must be accounted one o? the most astute and at the same time one of the most fortunate of •pre-sent-day owners. Many important successes have been credited to him in New Zealand in, recent years, including the New Zealand Cup (Bridge and Midnight Sun), Welcome Stakes (Indian Queen and Downham), Great ' Easter Handicap (Royal Scotch and Ventura), Great Autumn Handicap (PalaveT, Boomerang and Cheddar) Great Northern: Champagne Stakes (King Billy and Aborigine), Auckland Guineas (Aborigine and Maori King), Auckland Easter Handicap (Ventura), Hawke's Bay Stakes (Royal Scotch), Hawke's Bay Cup (Bridge), Hastings Stakes (King Billy and Tatterley), Manawatu Stakes (Aborigine), Napier Cup (Tradewind, Gazeley, Aro light and Cheddar), Wanganu.l Cup. (Nobility and Boomerang), anil.Wanganni Guineas ,(St. Mark, King Billy and Aborigine)'. A few years ago the Hawke's Bay sportsman turned his attention to the Australian turf, and he has already made a big mark there in connection with important events. He made a good investment, when he purchased Ventura, as a yearling in the autumn of 1911, as a few months later she won the Breeders' Plate and Gimoraok ©takes. She then came to New Zealand, where she won some good stakes, and she is now back in Australia, still showing winning form. Athenio was oaiothen good yearling purchase, his two-year-old successes including the Australian Jockey •Club's December Stakes and Champagne Stakes, while* last season he accounted for the rich Carrington Stakes, at the summer meeting of Sydney TatterhalTs Olub. In the meantime he won good races with some of his New Zpaland-bred horses. Wimmera was unlucky in more than one imoprtant jumping event, but he proved himself a high-class hurdler, while Midnight Sun accounted l for the Adelaide • Cup, - Moonbria and Tatterley being others to-score, though in less important events, in Mr Watt's colours. ' ; At' Rioeartom Rencontre, assisted - by Banksia over the last three furlongs, covered seven furlongs brilliantly in lmin 29 l-sseo; Samiel was going very easily ait the end of a mile run in company with Corrie; and First Glance left Moddite behind in a soven-furiong s»in. Mountain King, the sire of Mountain ! Knight, winner of the A.J.C. Derby, won the same race in 1907. He also won the Victoria Derby. Win Soon, the favourite for the New Zealand Trotti.ia Cup, is causing his trainer considerable trouble on account of corns. A Press Association cable message from Sydney states that Tim Doolan'B owner was fined 40s for late scratching in the Steeplechase on Monday. WINGAtUr TRACK NOTES Press Association. DUNEDIN.
