WRECK OF THE KAIRAKI
RESOLUTIONS BY SEAMEN’S UNION.
At a meeting of the Federated Seamen’s Union on the 28th inst., the following resolutions with reference to the loss of the s.s. Kairaki at Point Elizabeth, West 'Coast, on the 26th inst., were passed unanimously:— 1. That the members of this branch of the Federated Seamen’s Union records'with regret the loss of brother members in the wreck of the s.s. Kairaki, and respectfully tender to the relatives of the crew their sincere sympathy and condolence in their sad bereavement.
2. That the Government be urged immediately to cause an investigation into the probable causes leading up to the loss of the s.s. Kairaki, as wo have reason to think that something of an extraordinary nature is attributable 1 to her wreck.” . 3. That the secretary be authorised to take such steps as are necessary to conserve the legal rights of dependents and other relatives of pur members, and request dependents and relatives to communicate with this union for that purpose. With reference to number (2) resolution it has been transmitted to the Hon. Minister for Marine, Mr Fisher, and he has been urged to authorise an inquiry being held at an early date. The secretary, Mr W. T. Young, -explains that the dependents of the members of the crew have legal claims to compensation under the Workers’ Compensation Act, and therefore the union desires to get into touch with them in order that the claims may be properly conserved.
