News has just been received from Mr.; A. H. Jones, late of Christchurch Tech‘S nioal College, that on August stlb- be was in Hamburg, with no chance of getting away. He was being well treated. and bios his friends not to worry but hope for the best. , Sir Douglas M’uwson, the Antarctic explorer, will leave Sydney for Wellington on Friday, and will spend ten days in the Dominion. Owing to complications caused by the war he has abandoned Ms projected tour of South Africa, and is thus able to visit New Zealand on his way to London. He is accompanied by Lady Mawson. Archdeacon Gould, who died at Dunedin on Sunday, was horn at Wolverhampton in 1851, and arrived in Lyttelton in 1873. He studied theology a t Christ's College, and was ordained deacon in 1874. He was married to a daughter of Mr Thomas Cane, of Christchurch, and held five cures in the diocese pf Christ church. He was one of the keenest and , best-known , chess players! in the Dominion. . , .

Mr A. J. Barr, late chief officer of the ’ Maori, who went to London on leave as an extra officer in the Wiakatanc, to join his wife and two children in Ante werp, was prevented from doing so, owing to the outbreak of war. Mrs Barr, who went to England in the Buahine, was staying with her father, a merchant, in. Antwerp, and it is understood that Mr Barr has volunteered for active ser- ■ vice on the Continent in the hope of being able to see his ..wife. -a, *■ —> A pleasing function took place at the Grand Hotel last night, when Mr Franklyn Price, from the head office of the Temperance and General Life Assurance Society. Melbourne, was given a dinner and presentation by the members of the Wellington staff prior to hig departure for Australia. Mr’C.” A. Mr J. Vigor Brown was the gubject of a very gratifying compliment yesterday morning on bis first appearance in Wellington after his recent severe illness. He was walking along Victoria street, on his way to Parliament Buildings when he met a considerable body of the troops marching from the Opposite direction. He was at once recognised by the Hawke’s Bay contingent which immediately raised a joyful shout, "Here's Vigor." and then gave him three hearty cheers, in which the whole of the troops joined. The demonstration was as enthusiastic as it was spontaneous, and furnished a sterling exemplification of the popularity of the genial member for Napier.
