MIRACULOUS ESCAPE

LEVEL CROSSING SMASH.

Tiioro was a serious motor-car smash at Otaki shortly before midday yesterday. A five-seater Buick car, belbnging to Mr Martini, of ToHoro, and driven by a young Maori, was crossing tbo line a few yards north of-OtaM railway station, when a mixed train, whjoh. had just loft the yard, crashed into it. It seems that the driver of the car saw the train approaching, applied th© brakes, and came to a dead stop right between the mils. The engine shot the motor about twenty yards ahead, completely wrecking it. The driver, however, was thrown clear, and miraculously escaped death. He _ sustained nothing more than a fow bruises.
