ATTEMPT TO ESCAPE
DESPERATE PRISONERS ONE JUMPS OVERBOARD AND DISAPPEARS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright MELBOURNE, May 18. Two prisoners, named Maroney and Downey, escaped from the Launceston Gaol in March last, and were rearrested at Albany. They were returning by the steamer Indarra. in charge of two constables, and when entering the bay Downey complained of illness, and left his cabin in charge of one of tho constables, Maroney and tho other constable remaining, Tho door of the cabin was closed but not locked, and Maroney dashed out. The constable, who was asleep, awoke and chased the man round the decks. The fugitive snatched a lifebelt and jumped overboard.
Meantime, Downey made a jdesperate attempt to escape, but was overpowered and handcuffed. The steamer was stopped and an unavailing search was made for Maroney. The jump was made four miles from land, and it is believed Maroney was drowned. .
