AND BEACH STROLLERS. ' Further regulations for th© control of bathing places were before the City Council last night." A recommendation was mad© by th© by-laws committee to amend the by-law on the subject by the addition of the following new clauses: “No person over the “age of ten years shall be or remain on any beach foreshore open to the public except for the purpose of entering th© water or leaving the water to reach any bathing shed unless such person shall he clad in the swimming costume known as the Canadian costume,”
“ For the purposes of this clause ‘adult’ means any person of or over, the ago of. fourteen years, ‘ child ’ means any person under the age of fourteen years: • No person shall permit any.child under his or her control to enter any bathing-shed erected by the corporation and set apart for the use of adults, and so indicated by notice thereon while there’ shall be in the same locality a shed erected and set apart for the use of children and so indicated by notice thereon.” “ As the proposed by-law reads,” remarked Councillor Buddie, “it is far too drastic. It will prevent Your Worship and myself from going to Lyall Bay beach. ‘No person shall be or remain on the beach without a costume-’ That means that Your Worship or I cannot go for a stroll unless we put on a Canadian ■ costume,”
(Laughter.) His Worship: “There are too many restrictions on councillors now.” (More laughter.) -. On the motion of Councillor Buddie, seconded by Councillor Tregear, the recommendation was referred back to the committee to make the necessary alteration “to render the proposal more explicit.
