PROBATION GRANTED
TWO CASES OF THEFT. Two prisoners appeared before His Honour Mr Justice Hocking for sentence yesterday morning in tho Supreme Court. Charles Charlewood, aged twentysis, had pleaded guilty to a charge of having stolen, on March 26th, from the hulk Jubilee, at Wellington, about 15owt of copper and a drum of Stockholm tar, the property of tho Westport Coal Company. Mr H. F. O’Leary spoke on behalf of the accused on Wednesday, and sentence was postponed to enable. the case to be fully considered. His Honour yesterday stated that he had decided to admit the accused to probation, on condition that ho fulfilled the offer made by Mr O’Leary, to repay the sum of £l7 10s, representing the amount of the theft Accordingly, twelve months' probation was granted, and the accused was allowed the same time in which to pay tho money. A youth of sixteen, named Christopher* James White, came up for sentence on a charge of theft of property and money to the total amount of £2S, to which he had pleaded-guilty. The sum of £2l, and a watch and overcoat. were found on the accused. The theft was from a fellow employee ai the cable station. The youth was admitted to probation for twelve months, and the condition was laid down that he should pay £3 towards the cost of the prosecution. The stolen property will be restored to its owner.
