Professor William M. Davis, of Harvard University, who has been travel* ling for some months amongst the islands of the Pacific studying tho problem of the origin of barrier reels and atolls, arrived in Wellington by tho Main Trunk express yesterday moi-ii-ing. Ho is spending a few weeks in. Now Zealand before continuing Ilia study of tho coral reef problem in New Caledonia. Ho is staying at the Royal Oak while in Wellington.

Mr C. E. Matthews, Dcputy-Iftspoe* tor of Prisons, lias received thb appointment of Inspector for the Dominion, in succession to Dr Hay, whoso time will now ho fully devoted to the Inspector-Generalship of Mental- Hospitals. Erom 1896 to 1909 Mr Matthews was private secretary to successive Ministers for Justice, and iu. 1912 became Chief Clerk of the Justice, Department- He will leave by the Mannganui to-day to inspect the prison systems of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, on which he,, will make a report to the Minister. Sir Hartmann Just, Assistant-Under-Socretary of State tor the Colonics, will visit New Zealand-' next month. Ho is at present engaged in making a tour of Australia. According to his present programme Mb will arrive at Bluff from Hobart on June 17th, and, after visiting tho chief centres, will take his departure from Auckland for Vancouver, on route to London, by the Niagara, nailing on July 3rd. In the course of an interview recently, Sir Hartmann said that he had come out -to Australasia to. gain personal knowledge of the social, political, and economic conditions-■exist-ing here.
