THE STRIKE FUND

BALANCE-SHEET ISSUED. The United Federation of Labour has issued a balance-sheet in connection with the recent strike. It shows that the receipts amounted to £6334 14s Hd, of which New Zealand unions contributed oppi oximately £2600 and Australian unions approximately £3BOO. Nearly half the New Zea-

land; amount vas contributed by the New Zealand Shearers’ Association, who gave £663, and the Manawatu flaxmillors, who furnished £629. The payments amounted to £6131 11s, leaving a balance at the bank of £253 3s lid. The principal payments are given as follow.—By relief —Wellington £1450, Huntly miners £1215, Auckland £IO2O, Dunedin £725, New Plymouth £lO5, British seamen £l3O, Nelson £IOO, and families imprisoned strikers £25; by meals, etc., supplied prisoners and strikers £54 18s lOd, travelling expenses {New Zealand and Australia) £132, executive meetings £199, and legal expenses £4Bl. The balance-sheet is certified to by Mr H. Bolton, F.1.A., N.Z.

In an attached memorandum, Mr P. H. Hickey, secretary-treasurer of the federation, states: —“ In . connection with the balance-sheet of the strike fund, I desire, in justice to the Labour organisations of the Dominion, to point out that, in addition to the sums paid to the federation fund, many contributed - also ;to the local strike centres. ... In consequence, the support received from organised Labour in New Zealand is far in excess of the amount received at this office. The balance shown jias been placed to a separate account, and will be used solely for relief of oases of distress arising from various causes, such as the gaoling of bread-winners, etc.”
