MATCH AGAINST CANTERBURY PATRICK AND SANDMAN IN GOOD FORM. Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, March 13. Beautiful weather prevailed for the return match between Canterbury and the Australian team, which commenced ed at Lancaster Park to-day. The ground was in beautiful order. Cody and Dolling stood out of the Australian team, and McGregor kept wickets for the visitors. Reese and Whitta were unable to play for Canterbury, the former suffering from toncihtis and Whitta being out through an injured hand. Patrick was appointed to lead the local men, and Cuygill and Beal filled the gaps. , Patrick won the toss and Woods and Caygill went out to open Canterbury a innings, Armstrong opened tho bowliny from the south end with a maiden, and Crawford, after having both batsmen in trouble, bowled Woods with tho fifth ball of his first over. I—l—o. Hickmoti filled the vacancy, and Caygill square-cut Armstrong finely for 4, and got him to the on for a couple. In Crawford’s third over he dropped -a straight ouc on to Caygill’s too and got him Ibw.—B—2—B. Beal followed, and drove the South Australian for a pair. Hickmott was not timing them too well, and presently be lifted Crawford hard to Trumpet- at mid-off.—l3 — 3 — 3. Patrick joined ' Beal, and the latter got Armstrong for a pair to tho on. The Sydenham man, got Crawford to squnro-leg for 3 and an uppish pair to Beal tent 20 on the board. Noblo replaced Crawford, who had captured three wickets for 10, but his first over was a terribly loos© ono and included a couple of -widcs,, Beal also gelling a lucky 3 through the slips off it After some uneventful play Patrick chopped Armstrong prettily past third-man. for 3, and Beal offdreve a full toss from Noble to the boundary and glanced, him nicely to K-g for a trio. At 38 Mailey replaced Armstrong and Patrick lifted him over the cover-point’s head for a pair. In Noble’s next over Beal played one to short-log, and Waddy snapped up remarkably smart catch.—4o4—17. On resuming after luncheon Sandman partnered his skipper, and sent Mailey’s fourth ball, a full toss, past third man for 4. Patrick chopped Nibble prettily for a pair, and a single sent 50 tip for 70 minutes’ i-lay. Patrick lifted Mailey past cover-point for 4 and then swung him round to the on fence, a fine bit of fielding by Collins saving 4. Sandman reached double figures by chopping Mailey through the slips for 4, and with a couple of pairs and 4 to leg reached 20, Hailey’s over suffering to the tune of a dozen. Eighty went up for an uppish 4 past the third-man to Sandman, and the batsmen were giving a breezy display. Sandman banged Mailey to the squareleg fence, the umpire having to skip to get out of the way. The next ball also went to the leg fence. At 91 Armstrong replaced Mailey, and great amusement was caused by the batsmen getting a single for a tar.' just in front of the wicket, batsman and bowler colliding on the patch. - Patrick got a, lovely 4 off Noble past cover-point, the stroke going, to, the: fence like a flash. An dppish’ pair- to Patrick saw 100 up for 92 minutes' play. The last 60 had come for just over twenty minutes’ play, and each batsmau was 35. At 106 Laver took tho ball from Noble and Sandman, cut him .for 4, two 2’s and a single from the first over. Simgained applause by saving a boundarj brilliantly'and Patrick lifted Laver tr the on boundary, reaching 40 and sending 120 up. Sandman got to 60 in into minutes' and lifted Armstrong ovei tho mid-off’s head for 4. In Laver’.next over Sandman sent a: hot chance to Armstrong’s left hand in the slip-, and the same batsman banged a ful. toss from the big man to the squareleg boundary. Patrick reached 60 with a lovely straight drive which beat Collins in tho race for the fence, li had taken him ninety minutes. Ho then lifted ono to square-leg, missing 6 only by feet. Patrick gave Trumper a hot chance at micl-off, but it was dropped. Sandman stepped across to tho off for a. hall from Armstrong for,,a square-leg hit and chopped it on to tho wiokets. 147—6—61. The partnership put on 107 runs in 68 minutes. Bisnop followed Patrick and square-cut Laver and off-drove him for 4’s off successive , balls. The Canterbury skipper reached 70 by lifting Armstrong over the on-fence for 6. Laver gave way to Crawford at 168, and this _ steadied the , run-getting. Patrick lifted Armstrong to mid-off, where Trumper made a catch. 172 6 Patrick hatted just under two hours. Carlton was the ingoer and opened with a 4 to leg and sent the next to the square-leg fence. Bishop 'lifted _ a full toss over Trumper’s head at mid-off, the ball going to the fence. Ho also lifted Armstrong nearly to the off fence, where Waddy brought off a very fine catch. 197 7 14. Monaghan was next and his partner square-cut Crawford for 3. This sent 200 up for 163 minutes' play, Monaghan opened up with a 4 to leg and got another 4 off Crawford. Carlton reached 20 with a square cut and got the next hall past third man for 4. Crawford’s oyer cost 14. Iln Armstifong’s next over Oanlton went out for a hit and was bowled—--2238—26.
After the tea adjournment, Bennett partnered Monaghan. The latter stopped a straight one with his pad and was given out “leg-before”—242—9— 21. Boxshall was the last man in, and he spooned one up to mid-on, but Crawford and Mailey left it to each other and the ball fell to the ground. Boxshall reached doubles with a 4 to leg which Sims failed to stop. The first ball of Crawford’s next over beat Bennett all the way, and the innings closed after 3 hours 25 minutes’ play for 253 runs. Waddy and Collins opened the innings for the visitors, Bennett and Carlton being the bowlers. In Carlton’s second over Waddy survived a confident appeal for “leg-before.” Collins saved his wicket with his pad, but ho had played the hall first. He then, sent 20 u;# with a powerful
square cut for 4. and Waddy got 4 with an uppish stroke just out of the slip’s reach. Bennett and Carlton were bowling with plenty of vim and keeping the batsmen quiet. At 35 Monaghan replaced Bennett, and in the first over beat Waddy badly, the ball just missing the wicket. Bennett went on at the other end, and Collins pulled him for a quartette. Waddy got another 4 for a fine on drive off Monaghan, and lifted the rext over the square leg fence, bringing 60 up in thirty-eight minutes. At 53 Sandman replaced Bennett, and stumps were drawn shortly after. Scores;—
