MATCH AGAINST SOUTHLAND. VISITORS MAKE 709. Press Association. INVERCARGILL. March 11. The cricket match between Southland and Australia was concluded to-day m brilliant weather, and there was a large attendance. Southland, in their first innings, put up 156 and Australia responded with a score of ‘vv, centuries being made by imoy, Collins, McKenzie, and Trumper. The wicket wore well, the Australians saying it was equal to any played oil during the tour. A tea cure of the innings was the brilliant display of Trumper (211). He scored freely all round the wicket, and gave a chance catch early in his score, put was unaccepted. and thenceforth the home team was given an afternoon’s leather-hunting. Cody and Collins resumed choir innings to the bowling of Groves and Doig, runs coming rapidly, but the fielding was excellent, and it was only the good placing of the batsmen that brought boundaries. Changes in the bowling made no difference to the batsmen, 15 being knocked off one over. At tho luncheon adjournment the score stood at 215 with the partnership unsovered, Cody being 101 and Collins 39. On resuming the batsmen were early running between the wickets. At 220 Cody skied one from Dole to point, where A. Hamilton took a catch. His 107 included ten 4 s—22o—s —lO7. McKenzie came in and the total soon became 230. At 26 a change was made in the bowling, Kavanagh going on. At 3.6 the third century appeared (Collins 90, McKenzie 33). Collins reached his century a little later, this being his highest score during the tour, ms next best beinsr 83 against South Auckland.- The end came at 339, when Doig took Collins, at first slip, off Bannerman. Collins was loudly applauded on returning to the pavilion—339 6 118. Trumper went in next. Then twos, threes and fours appeared in quick succession, and he reached double figures in four minutes. D. Hamilton, at mid-on, missed Trumper off Doig when he was 16. It was a costly mistake,- for Trumper knocked 13 off the following over from Bannerman. and at 3.50 the fourth century went up. The last half-century occupied only 13 minutes. Trumper was missed in th© long field, and then a® began hitting A’s. and! 420 was hoisted. Trumper mad© 50 in *,26 minutes, At the tea adjournment th© ecore "was 438. McKenzie brought his 100 up in two hours, hitting Hamilton twice clean out of the ground. Bannerman then went on and -McKenzie was f caught) at square leg bv las. Hamilton —500 7 116. Armstrong went in. Trumper was now scoring fours, and hoisted his century in 80 minutes’. At this stage the batsmen were content to take nothing but 4s. ana changes in the bowling were useless. Six hundred was hoisted .by Trumper hittinv Groves over the rails for 6 ,in b hours 30 minutes. Armstrong was later caught ,at the slips—6ll—B—33. prajford joined Trumper, who had 161 to his credit. The scoring was very lively, 20 coming in one over. Trumper got' his second century in 105 minutes, and was caught in the long field—6B7 —9—211. Ho hit four 6’s and thirty-three 4e. Noble joined Crawford, and scoring slowed down Seven hundred was telegraphed by Noble hitting Poole for 4.
