FIRE AT ISLAND BAY
UNOCCUPIED HOUSE DESTROYED,
An alarm of fir© was received from Island Bay shortly after half-past 10 o’clock last night, and the central and Newtown brigades both turned out. The conflagration was in Clyde street, the outbreak having occurred in an eight-roomed two-storied dwelling, which was not occupied. The flames had a good hold when discovered, and were fanned by a strong north-westerly breeze. It was evident that it would bo impossible to save the building from destruction, but the brigadesmen were able to do some valuable work in checking the spread of the flames, and thus preventing the adjoining dwelling, a similar eight-roomed house, occupied by Mr Bfeniss, from being demolished also. This was a difficult task, and the northerh corner of Breniss’s house suffered some damage. The first, house was practically destroyed. It was not possible last night to ascertain the particulars as to ownership, but it is believed that the building was in the hands of an agent.
