LABOUR DEPARTMENT REPORTS DULLNESS. J ‘During the period trade and labour fconditions have been aeriousjy Affected by the present industrial trouble, -which commenced with a strike of waterside workers sis weeks ago/ and has since spread to other industries,” says the Labour Department’s report Upon conditions in Wellington for November. ‘‘The result has boon, a dislocation of business generally, and> some branches of trade which aro usually brisk at this time of year are reported to be very dull, in manyi cases owing to the shortage of materials.” In respect to unskilled labour the report says;—“During the month there has been very little unskilled] work offering in the city, the cause, no doubt being the prevailing laboun unrest. Employment, however,' has. been found for 161 persons, the majority of whom were sent to the country- There is still a large demand for farm labourers who can milk, and. the department could place anothen fifty of this class of worker. Of the total of 161 men assisted 85 were married and 76 single, with 126 dependants ; 37 came from the North Island, 21 from the South Island, 16 from tho Commonwealth, 82 from. Great Britain, and 5 from other parts, and their occupations were those of carpenters, clerks, farm hands, gardeners. shop-assistants, shearers, and general labourers.”
