PERILOUS WORK
IN SENGHENYDD MINE EXPLORING PARTY OVERCOME BY FUMES. MANY MUTILATED BODIES FOUND. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright LONDON, October 22. During an exploration by twenty loading mining ofiicials at Senghenydd mine, the rearmost of the party woro suddenly overcome by fumes. Throe messengers were successively sent to warn those in front, but none returned. The gas intoxicated some, and finally all wore overcame. A rescue brigade was summoned. It exhausted its supply of oxygen in resuscitating those who had" collapsed. Eventually all were brought to tbo surface, .several being in a critical condition. Other resellers, after getting within thirty yards of the face, were driven back by the gas. The advance in another portion of the mine was impeded by heavy falls from the roof. The rescuers have found a large number of bodies, some decapitated and dismembered. Operations have been postponed till Friday, owing to the danger. The relief funds stand at £30,000.
