NOTES AND COMMENTS

By “Finland.” Tlie Blenheim horses, together with several others claiming engagements at the forthcoming meeting, arrived yesterday. Stewart Waddell brought ten and T. Quinlivnn six. Beldame has grown into a nice mare, and if her trainer can get her to stand a preparation, she should do well this season. She is bowling along in great style. The Gold Crest colt in J. H. Prosser's stable has not grown much since he was last seen at Trcntbam, but !ho can muster up a fair amount of pace. Old Los Angelos never looked better than ho docs just now, and is bowling along freely in his work. It is stated that ho has been backed in the doubles for the Trentham meeting. R. Percival will have tho mount on Hunakaha in his engagements at Trentham. Prcstwich has loft tho Karamu stable, having being secured by an Auckland owner, and in future the tour-year-old Birkenhead Arethusa gelding will be trained by J. Chaafe at Ellorslie. Prcstwich finished third in the Maiden Hurdle Race at Napier Park tho other day. Ben Deelcy’s wrist is still a bit weak, and ho feels the effects of it after riding a bit of work. Ho, however, should be quite alright by Saturday. At the Belmont Stud disposal sale last December, a brown yearling filly by Marble Arch—Pretoria, wont to Mr W. Ronlston at DO guineas. This youngster a half-sister to Soultoria, is now under Frank McManetnin’s care. Chief Marshal (Soult —Lady Hester), the full-brother to Master Soult, for whom the Victorian sportsman, “Mr S. A. Rawdon,” paid 900 guineas as a yearling, is unlikely, it is said, to equal his well-performed relative’s record. In fact, grave doubts are expressed as to ioult’s son standing much training. The celebrated Wakeful (Trenton — Insomnia) has this season produced a colt foal to St. Alwyfa, the sire of Lady Medallist. Tho ancient Stepniak gelding Kremlin is getting through his tasks at Takapuna under F. B. Ross in a satisfactory manner. Monsignor, a good-looking colt by Signor—Simonia, trained in F. McManemin’s stable, baa developed symptoms of soreness, and in consequence has been eased in his work. C. Scott, who had the misfortune to get his arm broken in a race at Avondale, is still on the invalid list. For some time tho bones remained apart at the break, but have now begun to knit. E. J. Rae’s team for Wellington ire looking really well, especially La Reina and Bleriot.. Beth marcs galloped attractively on Tuesday morning. Odessa is wearing a bright, healthy appearance, and is now under C. Prichard’s care. G. Price’s Wellesley Stakes representative, Piariform, is a lino bay colt, by Boniform from Boanerges’ dam. If looks count foi’ - anything, he should he lifficult to dispose of in tho Wellesley 1 takes. Parky, the winner of the last Winter Cup, is also doing well under J. H. Prosser’s care, and is pleasing the touts in his essays. Potoa looks as well as anything on the tracks. Ho claims an engagement In the Shorts Handicap on Saturday, but I’m afraid ho will do better over a longer journey. The tvithdrawal of Sir Solo from the New Zealand Cup would not create much of a surprise, as it was previously stated that his running at Masterton would decide whether he would bo started in the Riccarton event. I think everyone who saw him at Masterton will agree that ho was far from ready, and he never had a chance at any part of tho race. The field for the two-thousaud-ponnder is slowly decreasing, and there is a likelihood of several others dropping out when tho next payment becomes duo on Friday next. Tho Flying Fox horse The Welkin is getting a good advertisement in his first season. His daughter Spica led off by capturing the Mnribyrnong Stakes at Flemington and the Debutant Stakes at Caulfield, while his son Achonar was first home in tho Morphotvillo Plate, run in South Australia. Tho Victorian sportsman, MrE.E. D. Clarke, who imported Tho Welkin, owns Spica and Ache ran, so that he has good reason to rejoice over tho purchase of the English sire. Several important . improvements have been carried ont on the Trentham racecourse since tho last meeting. The most notable is tho enlargement of tho totalisator house on tho main lawn, which now occupies the whole of the building previously used, as a bar. The ten-shilling machine house is also enlarged, and has eight or nine additional pay-out windows. An elaborate building has been erected just inside tbe lawn gate leading from the railway siding, and this will tako tho place of the old booth, which in the past has proved much too small for the number of people who patronise tho Wellington Club’s meeting. ' Special steamer and train arrangements have been made for the convenience of visitors to the Marlborough meeting, nominations for which close on Monday next.
